One of the most celebrated productions of Shakespeare’s Scottish Play in recent Irish theatrical memory is set to visit Limerick this spring, as Druid Theatre brings its visceral and acclaimed staging of Macbeth to the Lime Tree Theatre from 23 to 25 April 2026.

Following sold-out runs in Galway and Dublin in 2025, the Galway-based company returns to the road with a production that has drawn widespread critical praise, earning a five-star verdict from The Irish Times, which hailed it as “magnificent horror… extraordinarily accomplished… riveting.”

Tony Award-winning director Garry Hynes helms the production, reuniting with fellow Tony Award winner Marie Mullen, who takes on the role of Lady Macbeth. Marty Rea leads the cast in the title role, with further casting to be announced ahead of the April dates.

The production places Shakespeare’s bloodiest tragedy in its medieval Scottish setting, following the ambitious army general Macbeth as he is visited by three witches who foretell his rise to the throne. Emboldened by his wife, he embarks on a murderous course that unravels his mind, his marriage and the nation itself.
