FIANNA Fáil councillor Catherine Slattery heard concerns from residents and business owners in Drombanna over the need for a footpath extension from the Four Elms up to the junction in Drombanna, as there is a HSE house in the vicinity with no footpath or lighting exiting the site.
“It is very dangerous,” Cllr Slattery said.
“The Roads Engineer advised he would make an application to the National Transport Authority, which he has already done, and if funding is granted, one scheme will happen in 2026 and the other in 2027.
“The first scheme will consist of a footpath going towards the city up as far as McCarthy’s Boreen on opposite site of road. Lighting and road markings with accommodation works if needed.”
The other scheme, she revealed, will consist of a footpath from the Four Elms up as far as the junction where lighting and road markings will be installed.
“People in the area will have a footpath to walk on which will bring much needed safety. Also the extra lighting will have a great impact in the area because with extra lighting the place is lit up and pedestrians and car users have better vision and hopefully car users will slow down also,” she said.
“I am delighted that I was able to meet with the residents and the road engineer to get these matters resolved as we cannot forget rural areas as these areas have a lot of people living in them that need to be safe when walking and driving.”
