A LIMERICK man is marking almost 40 years as a volunteer for Daffodil Day which takes place later on this week (Friday, March 20).

77-year-old Michael Quinlivan from Limerick City started volunteering 39 years ago after his father passed away from cancer.

Michael told the Limerick Post about his own cancer diagnosis last year, successfully completing 20 rounds of radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

He has lost siblings, cousins and as recently as last week, his sister-in-law to the disease.

Mr Quinlivan who lives in Thomond Gate has raised €227,305 in support of the charity.

Each March, the Limerick man can be found selling daffodils and other gifts from a stall at Limerick’s Milk Market to raise funds for the cause and this year will be no different.

On Daffodil Day itself, he can be found at Arthur’s Quay Shopping Centre, with several volunteers also planned to be out and about across the county.

The generosity of Limerick people doesn’t go unnoticed either, Michael said.

“One year I was collecting on O’Connell St and a woman approached me and asked if I was collecting. I said that I was, and she put the palm of her hand into mine and ran away. When I opened my hand out, there was €100 in it.”

The Irish Cancer Society’s impact report revealed that almost 30,000 free lifts to and from cancer treatment were provided in 2025, as well as over 26,000 Support Line and Daffodil Centre conversations with people affected by cancer.

Over 14,300 people availed of free counselling sessions and up to 6,000 free nights of Night Nursing for patients at end of life.

Daffodil Day takes place this Friday, visit cancer.ie to get involved and learn more on how to donate.
