A PACKED and celebratory atmosphere filled The People’s Museum last Friday March 20 as Limerick’s renowned College Players marked their 100-year anniversary with the launch of their commemorative book A Century of Theatre. The event also marked the opening of a special exhibition, which will remain on display until Thursday April 2.

Members past and present gathered in large numbers, creating a warm and nostalgic setting as stories were shared and memories rekindled from decades of productions, reflecting the strong sense of camaraderie that has sustained the group across generations.

The Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, highlighted the vital role of cultural and community organisations in enriching the city’s artistic life, praising College Players for their longevity, resilience and enduring passion for theatre.

Chairman Dave Griffin served as MC and introduced Joan McGarry, who spoke about the research and collaboration behind the book with Niall Moore and Griffin. The publication captures both the history and spirit of the group and features a rich collection of photographs, brought to life by designers Margarita Bernal Arango and Ken Coleman.

A highlight of the evening came from former actor and director Dan Lawless, who shared humorous recollections from his time on stage and paid tribute to his aunt Betty Lawless, reflecting a family tradition of theatre.

Thanks were extended to sponsors Kevin Jackson and Jane Harris of Jackson Architects. The evening was a fitting celebration of a century of theatre and community spirit. The book is now available at O’Mahony’s Bookshop and Eason stores across the city.
