A MAN who died after being assaulted on St Patrick’s Day in Limerick City is to be laid to rest today alongside his son, who tragically was killed eight years ago in a completely unrelated attack, also on St Patrick’s Day.

Liam ‘Gingee’ Higgins (55) passed away, following an assault by a group of people at Athlunkard Street on March 17, as a result of his injuries at University Hospital Limerick this past Wednesday night, surrounded by his family.

Three men are currently before the courts charged in connection with the death of the father of four.

The incident took place on the eighth anniversary of Mr Higgin’ son Jamie’s death, who was killed in a completely unrelated stabbing incident at a nightclub at Shannon, County Clare, on St Patrick’s Day 2018.

The State Pathologist conducted a post mortem on Mr Higgins’ body on Thursday, the results of which will determine the course of the Garda investigation into his death.

An obituary notice published online said that “Liam’s family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of the A&E and ICU of University Hospital Limerick for their exceptional care and support”.

Mr Higgins, of Mungret, County Limerick and late of Ryan’s Cottages and O’Malley Park, is pre-deceased by his son Jamie and father Jim (Seamus). He is survived his mother Anne, wife Sharon, sons Calvin and Scott, daughter Leanne, grandchildren, siblings, relatives and friends.

His funeral was to take place at St Nessan’s Church, Raheen, this morning (March 28).

The obituary notice said that “Liam will be laid to rest with his son Jamie in Castlemungret Cemetery, Mungret.”

The family requested that the home stay strictly private, with family flowers only.
