FIANNA Fáil Senator Dee Ryan has highlighted in the Seanad that Ireland is facing a shortfall in cancer clinical trials, with patients in Limerick and the Mid West being left behind.
The senator was speaking following recent evidence to the Oireachtas Committee on Higher Education, where Cancer Trials Ireland outlined gaps in access to clinical trials across the country.
“Clinical trials give patients earlier access to new, potentially life-saving treatments. For many, they offer real hope at a very difficult time.
But patients in Limerick and across the Mid West are not getting the same access to that opportunity,” Senator Ryan commented.
Of more than 5,300 trials opened across the EU between January and September 2025, just 1.1 per cent were opened in Ireland.
