Upper age limit for bus drivers increased

THE upper age limit for drivers of small public service vehicles contracted under the School Transport Scheme at Bus Éireann has been increased, allowing drivers to work up until the age of 72, for a trial period.

The limit is only for vehicles with a maximum of eight seats and a driver.

The news was welcomed by County Limerick TD and Minster of State at the Justice Department, who noted that “experienced drivers are the backbone of school transport in many rural communities and it makes sense to retain that experience”.

“This is an important step forward and it is important that more work is done now following this trial to move past the reliance on an age limit,” he said.
