THE People’s Park in the heart of Limerick City has officially been designated as a ‘quiet area’.
The status designation comes following consultation with the Environmental Protection Agency and approval from Environment Minister Darragh O’Brien, under the Environmental Noise Regulations 2018.
“The designation formally recognises the park’s tranquil sound environment. While it does not impose noise limits or restrict activities, the designation acknowledges that the quality of sound within the People’s Park is significantly more pleasant than in the surrounding busier urban areas,” a statement from Limerick Council explained.
“It is the first designation in Ireland to be based on an innovative soundscape approach, combining objective sound measurements with an assessment of people’s emotional responses to the acoustic environment.”
