FUNDING for two new Garda stations in Limerick was allocated funding as part of Budget 2026.
A portion of the €390million capital budget was ring-fenced to progress works for stations in Castletroy and Newcastle West.
The funding, announced by Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan, comes under National Development Plan allocation.
Fine Gael Minister and Limerick TD Kieran O’Donnell said it’s welcome news for Castletroy as “the need for this Garda station for Castletroy is clearly evident, with the Castletroy/Annacotty area currently having a resident population of over 16,000, swelled by a UL student population of over 18,000, which gives rise to a population of about 34,000”.
“This excludes the large number of people working in the greater Castletroy/Annacotty area. It is expected that the resident population will grow to in excess of 27,000 over the coming years.”
The Office of Public Works completed a scoping exercise to identify sites for the new station, sharing the results with An Garda SÃochána members.
The funding, part of the over €6.17bn investment for the justice sector for 2026, will also substantially advance construction of the Newcastle West station.
The €18m HQ is planned to be largely completed next year, with its fit out scheduled to be finalised in 2027.
Minister of State at the Justice Department, Niall Collins, says the new station will be “an absolute game-changer in terms of crime and policing in Limerick and it is hugely welcome”.
The Budget also has a fund of €5m for refurbishment works in 2026, which will benefit Mayorstone Garda Station.
