A NEW incentive has been established to encourage those who have applied for asylum in Ireland but have had their claims rejected to return to their home country voluntarily.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan announced the change, whereby if a person decides to opt for voluntary return either before receiving a first instance decision or before appealing a negative first instance decision their assistance is increased to €2,500 per person to a maximum of €10,000 per family unit.

Limerick Minister Niall Collins explained the incentive has been introduced “in the context of improving our application system and speeding it up”.
