ASKEATON Swimming Pool and Leisure will not reopen its doors today (Tuesday October 28) as originally planned, due to a delay in receiving some of the required water testing results.

Swim Ireland and Limerick City and County Council announced last week that the popular leisure centre would reopen after the October Bank Holiday weekend after shutting its doors just over two years ago.

However in a statement issued by the Council this week, the local authority said the decision was made as a “precautionary measure, and in line with our commitment to public safety”, explaining that “we cannot proceed with re-opening until all necessary testing has been completed, and the results have been thoroughly reviewed”.

“A revised re-opening plan will be formulated and communicated once all outstanding test results have been received and verified.”

The centre, situated on the banks of the River Deel, just off the N69 in Askeaton, closed in March 2023 and has since undergone major refurbishment by Martins Construction.

These works have been partly funded by the Department of Sport’s Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund and Limerick City and County Council.

Significant flood protection measures have been implemented as part of the refurbishment works, along with an upgrade of the mechanical and electrical plant.

Once re-open, people will be able to avail of the 25-metre heated swimming pool, as well as a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and state of the art gym equipped with a cardio section, strength area with free weights and a fitness studio.
