FIANNA Fáil councillor Fergus Kilcoyne has requested a progress report on the construction of temporary rail platforms for passengers travelling between Foynes and Limerick for the much anticipated Ryder Cup in 2027.
Speaking at November’s Metropolitan District meeting, Cllr Kilcoyne proposed that Limerick City and County Council write to the National Transport Authority (NTA), Irish Rail, and the Department of Transport for an update on temporary platforms at all population centres including Adare, Patrickswell, Rosbrien, and Dooradoyle.
This follows on from an earlier motion from the City West representative which was passed at an area meeting in October 2024.
“Thirteen months since the motion was passed, I have heard nothing and it’s only 22 months away from the Ryder Cup. I think it is imperative that we get an update,” Cllr Kilcoyne told the Council executive.
The Fianna Fáil councillor also took the view that it should be stated in a letter to Irish Rail that a temporary platform will be welcome in Patrickwell adjacent to land recently purchased by the Council for park and ride use for the golf competition.
“The reason I put in Rosbrien is because it’s backing onto the Crescent Shopping Centre, so if anyone wanted to go into Limerick after the Ryder Cup to go shopping. I think we need to start thinking now about moving things forward. This is a stepping stone onto bigger things for Limerick. The Ryder Cup is the biggest event coming and we need to capitalise on it,” he concluded.
