THE Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) have submitted a multi-million euro plan for a new Velodrome multi-sport and indoor cycling track.

A planning application has been lodged to Limerick City and County Council for ten year permission for the construction of the 7,201 square metre facility at its Coonagh campus.

The City North Arena will be over 22 metres in height designed to maximise energy efficiency and operational flexibility.  It will hold 476 permanent spectator seats as well as an infield arena for various sports including gymnastics, badminton, volleyball, tennis and football.

It will also serve the wider community to be used as an exam hall, count centre, and to hold dinners and concerts.

Plans also account for ancillary works, external signage, plant and electrical rooms, a new pedestrian link, new access and service road areas and upgrading a section of a public road.

Car parking will also be available with the creation of 32 spaces and two coach parking spaces, as well as 48 bicycle spaces.

The existing site is an undeveloped vacant site within the curtilage of the wider TUS Coonagh Campus, located on the outer north-western edge of Limerick City close to the county border with Clare.

The project aligns with TUS’  Capital Development Strategy and a partnership with Cycling Ireland to establish Ireland’s first indoor velodrome outside Dublin, aiming for completion by 2027 to bolster national cycling programs and community engagement.

Funding includes €7.5 million from the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF), with the project positioned as a key driver for regional sports infrastructure, education, and economic investment in the Midwest. The long-term vision for the campus to offer national and international class facilities.

This comes after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2024 between and Cycling Ireland to develop a €15.4m indoor velodrome on the Northside of Limerick City.

The move marks a significant step forward in the delivery of enhanced sporting and community infrastructure for Limerick and the wider Mid West region.

If planning is approved, the project will then proceed to detailed design and procurement.
