LIMERICK Council was urged to expand the successful Bulky Waste Collection service operating in St Mary’s Park, Ballinacurra Weston, Moyross, Southill, Kennedy Park, Glasgow Park, and Galvone to all communities in the city on a rotational basis.

Making the proposal, Aontú councillor Sarah Beasley said she advertised the bulky waste collection service on social media and it was considered a huge success.

“But I had people from areas like Rathbane, Garryowen, Corbally, Dooradoyle, and Castletroy contact me to say, why can’t this be rolled out in other areas?

“I know the areas where the bulky waste was were actually the real blackspots of the city, but I think it’s only fair that we should look at rolling this out into other areas,” Cllr Beasley suggested.

The Council said that, over the past two years, a limited number of subsidised bulky waste collection events have been
provided in targeted areas across the county, adding:

“These bulky waste collections are funded under the Anti-Dumping Initiative, supported by the Department of Climate, Energy, and the
Environment. The events were focused on areas identified by the Litter Management Team as experiencing persistent issues with illegal dumping, backyard burning, and burning in public areas.
The initiative aims to reduce illegal dumping by offering householders in these areas a practical and accessible disposal alternative, while also discouraging illegal dumping and burning practices. More generally, the Council promotes waste management in line with the polluter pays principle, whereby those who generate waste are responsible for its proper disposal.”
