on our toes. What it does is it
highlights Limerick as a Sports
Destination – remember last
summer we hosted the World
Medical Games and next August
(2017) we will be hosting the World
Karate Championships in the UL
Sport Halls. So we are not telling
‘porky pies’; Limerick is the perfect
venue for major events in
International sport.
Last weekend we also hosted a
major Games Convention with
Brocon taking place from Friday to
Sunday in the Physical Education &
Sports Science Building. Originally
set up by the UL students involved
in the Games Society - it has grown
in popularity with over 800
participants in a variety of screen
games and challenges.
The highlight for me was watching all
the costumes as the participants
really got into the atmosphere by
dressing up as the ‘stars’ of the
various games. It was great to see
the diversity in participants but the
important thing is that there is a
sport or game for everyone to enjoy
and last weekend proved we can
cater for that.
On a sad note I travelled to
England last week to pay my respects
to the family of Eamonn Dolan who
passed away after a battle with
illness at too young an age. Eamonn
was Academy Director at Reading
F.C. and was the twin brother of my
great friend Pat Dolan who I worked
with at St Patrick’s Athletic and
Cork City. It was so sad to see a man
cut down in his prime with so much
yet to achieve for this incredible
football ambassador.
His family and particularly his
football family gave him a fitting
tribute and send-off with the owner
of Reading
Football Club
announcing that they are going to
call the North Stand the ‘Eamonn
Dolan Stand’ at the Madejski
Stadium after Eamonn on August
6th when they play Preston North
End FC on the opening day of the
season. Now that is some tribute
and most appreciated by the Dolan
family. My thoughts and prayers
are with Eamonn’s wife Erica, their
children Grace and Seamus and my
great friend Pat who are all finding
a huge void in their lives that can
never be filled and hopefully our
support will be of some comfort.
