In a new venture for the Limerick Post Sports section, young journalists are being given the chance to try their hand at match reporting. This week, Eoin Naughton provides the match report from last weekends Ulster Bank League Division 1A clash between St Mary’s and Young Munster.

 

St Marys 13 Young Munster 11

St Mary’s and Young Munster served up a thrilling encounter at at Templeville Road Dublin last Saturday that was as close as the scoreline suggests. A try on six minutes by Ian Mc Inley put Mary’s into a 7-0 lead. Ten minutes into the game strong pressure by Young Munster resulted in a penalty which was well struck by Young Munster scrumhalf Alan Kingsley, narrowing the deficit to four points. Young Munster continued to dominate proceedings and following a well worked move winger Aaron Carrol touched down in the corner. However the resulting conversion went narrowly wide. For the remainder of the half both sides had periods of dominance but the scoreline at the interval remained 8-7. At the start of the second half Young Munster were on top and were rewarded with a penalty which Alan Kingsley converted on eight minutes. Both teams upped the ante, St Marys Ian McInley knocked the ball on when he had the line at his mercy. An excellent try attempt by Young Munster was held up by a committed Marys defence. Buoyed by their passionate home support St Marys made frantic efforts to gain the lead. Spectacular defending from Munsters kept Marys at bay On 60 minutes Darren Hudson seemed certain to have scored a try but was prevented by an excellent tackle by Young Munsters Mark Doyle. Young Munster tried valiantly to defend their lead but on 78 minutes Marys substitute outhalf Gavin Dunne scored a drop goal from the halfway line to bring the score to St Marys 13 Young Munster 11. In the last few minutes Munsters tried to get into position to get the final score and were on the offensive when referee Simon McDowell blew the final whistle much to the delight of the large St Marys following. Munsters efforts were rewarded with a vital bonus point which maintains their top 4 position.
