LIMERICK animal rights campaigner John Carmody has welcomed the forward-thinking legislative efforts of Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, to ban horse-drawn carriages in the Big Apple.

John, founder of Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN), hailed Mayor de Blasio as “compassionate and progressive” for his push to retire horses off the congested and fume-filled streets of Manhattan.

The New York Mayor is the first to proactively work to ban the horse-drawn carriages. More than 10,00 members and supporters of ARAN are actively supporting these efforts.

“Irish eyes are smiling at Mayor de Blasio,” said Mr Carmody.

“For the first time in history an NYC Mayor is taking a progressive and brave step forward to retire this outdated and cruel means of transport that involves animal abuse, something that has roots in an Ireland time gone by. We encourage the Mayor to make 2015 the last year that we see these shameful carriages on the streets of New York. The luck of thousands of compassionate Irish people is being radiated across the Atlantic, to make it happen,” he concluded.
