“WE will not let Limerick fall back into the dark days when a bitter feud dogged this city for years”.

A defiant pledge from Limerick’s most senior garda who has vowed that An Garda Siochána will call upon every resource available, and will work with the community and the stakeholders of the city to quell any resurgence of the violence that claimed up to 18 lives during a bitter and deadly 15-year feud.

Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan made his comments to the Limerick Post following the attempted murder of convicted drug dealer and gangland figure Christy Keane last Monday morning as he went for an early morning gym session.

Chief Superintendent Sheahan, speaking to the Limerick Post on Tuesday night, said that the Gardaí, the city stakeholders “and more importantly the people of Limerick do not want to see this (feud) coming back. There has been a huge concerted effort to rid Limerick of the feud and we have always been aware that the void could easily be filed by a younger generation after a number of key figures were prosecuted, convicted and given very lengthy jail sentences. But we must use every resource to ensure that the dark days do not return to Limerick”, warned Chief Supt Sheahan.

Meanwhile, it was revealed that innocent bystanders could have been killed when two masked and armed men opened fire at the car park in the University of Limerick, according to a local councillor who happened to be going to the UL pool shortly after the incident.

Independent councillor Emmett O’Brien has called the shooting last Monday morning “an act of criminal thuggery that could have killed innocent bystanders”.
