People are being advised by Limerick City and County Council to avoid travel where necessary this Tuesday afternoon and evening due to forecast storm force conditions.

Met Éireann has issued an Orange Alert for Limerick, the second highest level of alert that the agency can issue.

From midday mean west to southwest winds of 60-75km/hr, with gusts of up to 120km/hr, unusually strong for inland locations, are forecast.

The storm, named Barney under the new Met Éireann/ UK Met Office storm naming system, will peak during Tuesday afternoon and will abate slowly during the late evening.

Limerick City and County Council said: “It is important that members of the public pay attention to Met Éireann’s advisory as this weather system has the potential to deliver Storm Force 10 winds to Limerick for a period during the afternoon to early evening.”

“Members of the public are advised to remain indoors where possible during the storm and to stay away from rivers and other water bodies. The Council is on full alert and will respond to emergencies as they arise or as it is safe to do so,” the Council added.
