NEW research has revealed that Limerick people like to be romantic in the dark.

Commissioned by Ikea, the survey found that most Irish adults prefer to have the lights off in the bedroom and Irish men are more inclined to leave it off than women are.

The findings for bedroom romance contrast the results for early morning light as 35 per cent of people surveyed say that a well-lit room is most likely to make them feel more energetic as the dark evenings creep in with some 34 per cent agreeing it makes them feel more productive and generally happy.

Both men and women claim that a well-lit room makes them feel at ease.

The research revealed that light doesn’t just uplift Irish spirits; it helps create a sense of security in a person’s home with more than 40 per cent of Irish adults claiming to leave a light on in their home when they are leaving to ward off burglars.

The survey also confirmed an ‘Irishism’ that over a third of Irish adults call the main light in a room “the big light”.
