Scarlett flames up to Salsa originals

LIMERICK’S first international Salsa Band, Montuno, comprised of  MA students for the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, is to host a song, dance and live band night – at Scarlett’s Nightclub, over The Bank Bar & Restaurant.

Taking place on Saturday Feburary 21, it will be the public’s first opportunity to participate in an innovative Latin song workshop, which will begin at 6pm. This wil be followed by Bachata and Rueda dance workshop at 7.30pm and Cha Cha and Merengue classes at 8.30pm. All are welcome, is Montuno’s message, and no, no experience in any of  the featured disciplines is required. The night winds up with two bands playing on from 9.30pm, Montuno backed by supporting act Manu & his Latino House, well known on the Irish and European live salsa scene.

Who are Montuno? “This band is steeped in culture and talent, having three former Masters graduates of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance and two current Masters students,” says manager Cathriona Murphy. “The band is headed up by Mexican born Óscar Mascareñas who is the course director of the new BA in Voice and Dance at the University of Limerick. The other members hail from Colombia, the US and Ireland”.

The costs for the night are: one workshop 13euro, two workshops 20euro including 5euro discount to see the bands. Entry to the live bands is 20euro.  A preview of what is in store can be garnered by listening in to Limerick’s Live 95 FM on Saturday 21 between 9am and 10 am when Montuno will be playing live.
