Stories and song for Women’s Voices

WOMEN’S Voices.. Women’s Stories is a new cultural venture laced over three consecutive Sunday afternoons in various county Limerick places. Organised by the County Arts Office, arts officer Joan Mac Kernan says it features “the formidable talent of singer Noirín Ní Riain, Cora Fenton of Call Back Theatre and poet Eileen Sheehan to three venues in the county”.

The concept of these afternoons of storytelling stems from International Women’s Day on March 8 this year which saw Women’s Voices.. Women’s Stories first platformed as a signal and celebration of female significance in the world.

“All three women were delighted with how well they worked together and welcomed the invitation to tour Women’s Voices… Women’s Stories… to other venues in the county this November”, says Mrs Mac Kernan.

Noirin ni Riain is a singer and writer, Cora Fenton actress and storyteller, Eileen Sheehan is County Limerick poet in residence.

Women’s Voices… Women’s Stories…begins its Winter journey on Sunday November 8 in ACM Community and Resource Centre, Castleconnell at 3.30pm-5pm, Holly Tree Theatre.

Sunday November 15, the party continues to St. John’s Church Knockainey, 3.30pm, joined by Allundé, the women’s community singing group. The last venue and Sunday falls on November 22 at Glenstal Abbey, again 3.30pm. County Limerick Youth Choir, the third initiative of County Arts Office to participate, will engage in this delightful afternoon of music, song, poetry and story.

All afternoons €5.

Metier’s career composition Upstairs

JAZZ Society’s lively series of young bands of long experience this season continues to hold good for November. The Wednesday night gig returns to Upstairs venue at Dolan’s, following on Yurodny’s concert of Klezmer music with Cora Venus Lunny on violin. Wednesday 11  is the next night out, band on c.9pm.

November 11’s choice is Métier, Ireland’s first Jazz Ensemble in Residence and attached to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. Métier has just completed two concert series at Cabinteely House to critical and audience acclaim.

Under the artistic directorship of Ronan Guilfoyle, composer and guitarist, “Métier is a group bristling with creative energy, both in improvisation and composition,” comments John Daly, chairman of Limerick Jazz Soc. “Their repertoire is comprised exclusively of pieces composed by the various members of the ensemble and performance by Métier represents the best that jazz in Ireland has to offer both in playing and composing”.

This who’s who extends to Michael Buckley on saxes and flute, Joe O’Callaghan on guitar, Justin Carroll on keyboards and Sean Carpio on drums.
