There was a certain festive feeling in the air as the Winterfest weekend was launched this week, which aims to draw crowds into the city and boost trade from November 20 to 22.

The festival will promote the retail industry in the city, and there will be numerous special offers and bargains to be had in participating stores, while Christmas markets will take place in Pery Square, Ellen Street and Bedford Row.

Laura Ryan of Limerick Co-ordination office, explained that free parking will be provided in the city on Saturday November 21, with special offers available in multi-storey carparks.

Maria Kelly, chief executive of Limerick Chamber, told the Post: “Everyone has come together to make this event a success.

“Times are tough, particularly for retailers who are at the front-line when people make cutbacks, but everyone is being proactive and we have had immense co-operating and involvement from businesses”.

Liam Dwane, general manager of Brown Thomas, told the Post: “Its important that we are all on the same track, because we have unique aspects to offer. People need to come in and feel the atmosphere in the city and see the lights, etc. Every store has put in a great effort in the last year with new windows, services and special offers. The pedestrianisation is great as it adds to the safety aspect”.

The Brown Thomas windows will return to a traditional theme of “Deck the Halls”, with a number of moving characters to delight children.
