Strings and composition

A YOUNG festive concert with a difference will take place on Thursday December 10 at The Church of the Holy Family in Southill at 1.30pm. Since September the Irish Chamber Orchestra has been working with pupils and staff of Galvone National School, teaching the violin as well as developing skills in singing and composition.

This month’s concert is the fruit of that collaboration. 170 children three city schools in all are taking part in the project, as musicians and composers nurtured by the Plassey based chamber orchestra.

“The school now has a bank of its own violins providing an instrument library accessible soon to all students,” notes Charlotte Eglington for the ICO. “20 members of staff, including the school caretaker are currently attending morning-music boot camp learning the violin, taking 8am lessons three times a week before class”.

These 20 budding violinists will perform alongside the ICO and pupils from 6th class Galvone who are already being put through their paces on violin.  Southill Junior School and St Mary’s Boys School are also supported by Limerick Regeneration as this project grows; JP McManus is another benefactor.
