Arts briefs for May 8

OPENED wide to the community

DAGHDHA has a two-part sequence of unique and free performances to roll out for May. OPENED is the title of this performance ritual which is for adults, and children under 16 years of age who are accompanied. All takes place at Daghdha Space, John’s Square on Tuesday May 11 and on Saturday May 22.

OPENED is all about handing over artistic control for those two days to the artists of its mentoring DMP programme.

“OPENED offers artists the opportunity to share their work, visions and propositions with a wider public,” says manager Gemma Carcaterra. “Events can range from performances and installations to symposiums and mini-festivals, insuring artistic diversity, experimentation and revelation.”Each ‘OPENED’ is excitingly different with the first of this series, taking the form of an installation by Emmalena Fredriksson on May 11, followed by Dance Ritual facilitated by Gwen Mc Hale on May 22”.

May music in the Park

LAUNCHED to coincide with Riverfest, a suite of free concerts presenting choirs, quartets, jazz, baritone, traditional and marching bands is taking place on May Saturdays. Look to lunchhour at The People’s Park and Arthur’s Quay Park for the very best in these music genres played live to the city.

The Environment Department of Limerick City Council, responsible for our parks, is concert sponsor on Saturday May 8 and Saturday 15 from 1.30pm to 3pm.

Everybody is welcome to these friendly outdoor events, simultaneous at People’s Park and downtown by the river. Irish Chamber Orchestra and Idol Bones led in this free sound parade for Riverfest. The upcoming programmes will be:

May 8: Traditional music from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at People’s Park; Sammy Benson’s Limerick City Brass and Reed Band at Arthur’s Quay.

May 15: Cantette and Limerick Youth Choirs at The People’s Park; Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band at Arthur’s Quay.

You can email environ@limerickcity.ie for the May Music in the Park schedule also.

PEGGY Carey at St Mary’s Cathedral is delighted to report details of the May lunchtime programme of recitals. Falling each Wednesday at the happy hour of 1.10pm, these recitals are free to the public, present a roster of musicians and are based principally on the works of Bach.

Arts page confirms a concert on Wednesdays May 12, 19 26 and again on June 2. Pencil these dates in for:

Wednesday 12: Malcolm Green on piano plays Haydn, Chopin, Albeniz and more.

Wednesday 19: Trevor Selby on organ returns with his Bach + One series, the other ‘one’ being Handel in this instance.

Wednesday 16: flautist Susan O’Leary plays Bach, Doppler and more.

Admission is free, we are reminded, but you might spare a thought and a cent for the retiring collection in aid of cathedral music.
