Atlantic oarsman to return home today

UPDATED – Ash cloud delays return

SEAN McGowan, the first Irish man to successfully solo row the Atlantic Ocean will return to his native Limerick tonight when he is expected to touch down at Cork Airport shortly after 4pm. Sean’s plane was expected to touch down at 1.30pm in Shannon this Friday but due to flight cancellations and alterations after the presence of the volcanic ash cloud over Ireland, he was forced to Gatwick and reschedule a flight to Cork.

However, Limerick and the Mid West is urged to lend its support for Sean’s return when it is hoped that he will get the homecoming he deserves early next week – the Limerick Post will bring you the news as soon as it is available.

After numerous delays at the start of the race, originally scheduled to begin at the start of December last year, Sean and the entire race fleet left the quayside wall at La Gomera in the Canaries on January 4 last. Now, almost four months later and after 118 days of ocean rowing, enduring hardship and battling the demons of solitude, Sean will return to Limerick to the throngs of supporters well wishers and awaiting family including his wife Lorraine and his two daughters.

The briefing is timed for 2pm after Sean comes through arrivals for photographs.

His journey started on January 4th from La Gomera in the Canaries and finished in Antigua on Sunday 2nd May.
