Plans demanded to activate marina

WITH the nine-year-old €4.5 million Limerick Marina having failed to deliver in bringing boating business and related tourism to the city, guarantees and commitments will be sought from Waterways Ireland when it visits City Hall shortly.

With the exception of a few “harbour huggers” moored all year round, the Arthur’s Quay marina remains unused.

Shannon Development project manager, John Crowe, was upbeat about the recent arrival of a cruiser hired by a German couple, for the specific purpose of sailing down the Shannon and berthing in the heart of Limerick.

He said: “We are trying to entice hire cruise companies to come to Limerick and yes, Waterways Ireland will have to do some work to resolve existing problems, including silt in the marina and the velocity of the water flow in the Abbey River, coming down from Ardnacrusha.

“The German couple expressed a wish to sail down to Limerick. They berthed at the marina and spent two nights here…these people will get on their blog and tell others about their visit”.
