Limerick is National Youth Choir 2010

CONGRATS to County Limerick Youth Choir winner of its second big prize this year. Director Maire Keary Scanlon led CLYC to first place in the National Youth Choir of the Year competition held at Navan Choral Festival.

Under the auspices of Limerick County Council Arts Office, the choir was set up “to give young people throughout the county who enjoy singing classical and contemporary music a forum outside of school,” says arts officer Joan Mac Kernan. “With our first audition we attracted young people from schools and colleges and the youth choir now has 30 members aged 16 to 24 years”.

CLYC’s other national win was at Limerick Festival of Church Music held in March. The county choir won the Youth Section, competing against equivalent choirs throughout the country.

YOUNG ev+ a drawing day

Under the overall theme of Matters to OPEN/INVITED e v+ a 2010, artist Fiona Reilly at LCGA will help children explore their environments by drawing using a “quiet and slow” approach.

YOUNG e v+ a Family Drawing Day is on Saturday May 22, 11am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3pm. It coincides with National Drawing Day.

Pery Square’s Family Days examine many ways of making art, allowing children to experiment with new and exciting ways of making through drawing, painting, collage and sculpture.

Children have to be accompanied for the workshop and you can book by email on artgalleryeducation@limerickcity.ie. The 2010 ev+ a catalogue is launched this Friday 21, Thomas Street Centre at 7pm.

 New and selected poems

LOCAL writer Teri Murray is guest of White House Poets at this bohemian bar on Wednesday May 26 next. She has just launched Where the Daghda Dances: New & Selected Poems (Revival Press) from which she will read.

“Though foremost a poet, Murray is also a novelist and dramatist,” we’re told.

There is the usual open-microphone session open to all comers and White House’s Glenn McLoughlin lays on hot finger food for the literary-minded and the hungry.
