Drumming workshop for Africa Day

UCH Participation and Learning invites all “wannabe drummers” to take part in a public workshop and performance for Africa Day 2010.

No previous experience necessary in this hour-long workshop for adults and children aged 12 and above (under 18s accompanied).

Drums will be provided and if you take part in the workshop you can join 60 other drummers in the exciting giant music performance at the flagship Africa Day. This will take place at City Hall on Sunday May 30.

Help Me to a Getaway

ORGANISED by Limerick Writers’ Centre, the monthly reading and open-mic session On the Nail continues to attract with its mix of poetry, prose and music. The next takes place on Thursday June 3 at the session’s regular venue, Locke Bar, George’s Quay.

Writers Knute Skinner and John Walsh lead the readings for the Whit weekend Thursday at 9pm.

The St Louis born Knute Skinner moved to Ireland in 2000 and lives with his wife Edna Faye Kiel in Killaspuglonane, County Clare. Thursday 3 is the launch of his memoir Help Me To A Getaway (Salmon Publishing) by poet Mark Whelan.

John Walsh is a Derry man. After years teaching English in Germany, in 1989 he returned to live in Connemara. Three years ago he received a Publication Award from Galway County Council to publish his second collection, Love’s Enterprise.

 

Garvey Centre dances for Special Olympics

THE dancers of the Daghdha/Garvey Initiative are to perform as part of the opening ceremony for the Special Olympics on Wednesday June 9 in Thomond Park Stadium. Working with Limerick-based choreographer Lucy Suggate they will perform alongside The Cranberries to a live audience of 22,000 spectators.

The Daghdha/Garvey Initiative is longstanding collaboration between Daghdha Dance Company and the Garvey Centre, Daughters of Charity Services, Limerick.

“This exceptional initiative entails regular weekly classes in dance and choreography for people with special needs as well as numerous innovative artistic projects”.

VLADIMIR Jablokov & The Slovak Festival Quartet provide an Evening of Music at All Saints Church, Castleconnell for this church’s restoration fund. 8pm. Friday May 28.

Mentoring programme welcomes artists

DAGHDHA is putting together its 2010/ 11 agenda and invites interested artists to enter for the annual Daghdha Mentoring Programme (DMP). Note that Daghdha specifically encourages expressions of interest from artists who have no formal academic qualifications and are in receipt of social welfare payment.

Former participants – more than 50 – are already contributing to contemporary dance and choreography in Ireland and beyond, having received numerous bursaries, commissions and residencies.
