City gets new Mayor

FINE Gael Councillor Marie Byrne has been elected the 814th Mayor of Limerick. She beat Labour Councillor Gerry McLaughlin by 12 votes to five.

Her eight Fine Gael colleagues including two independents and one Fine Fáil councillor supported her.

She is only the fourth woman to be elected Mayor of Limerick in over 800 years. Her Father Bobby Byrne served two terms as Mayor of the city from 1978 to 1980.
