Lee wants to bring world title home
AS THE pace hots up for Limerick boxing, Andy Lee is set to continue his hunt for glory when he takes on 40-year-old American middleweight, Troy Lowry (27 won – 10 lost) this Saturday at the Horseshoe casino, Hammond, Indiana.
Lee has always said that he would take one fight at the time and never show disrespect to his opponents but it is beyond this Hitz Boxing bout that is surly of most interest to the Castlconnell former Olympian.
The wheels and cogs of the boxing world have been working away in the background and a bout against fellow Irish middleweight John Duddy is now almost set for New York on December 4 next. Lee continued his march to glory last recently with an impressive display against Michael Walker and with the fight all but secured against Duddy, the Limerick southpaw is moving ever closer to becoming a world title challenger.
With some thinking it a gamble, a Madison Square showdown with Duddy will sort the next rung in the challenger ladder, one that Lee has said he always wants to climb to the top of.
Talking on Eastside Boxing’s “On the Ropes Boxing Radio” after his Walker win, Lee noted his intentions.
“Yeah, I’m well ranked now and I could be getting a call any day for a title shot. So staying active is going stand for me for having all of these fights. When you’re doing something on a regular basis it becomes like second nature. When we’re in the dressing room, we just go through the routines. Everybody knows their jobs, everybody knows their roles. I love fighting. I like training, but it’s tough and the sparring is hard. If you can do the same sparring as you can do fighting, I might as well be fighting so that when I’m in the gym I can be getting paid for it, and building my record and getting experience.
“I want to fight the best, whoever that is. I want to be the best so I have to beat the best. That’s what I signed up for in 2006 when I turned pro. I left my home and promised I’d come back with a world championship and that’s my dream”.
Emmanuel Steward has said that talks with Craig Hamilton, Duddy’s manager, are at a very advanced stage.
“As far as I’m concerned Andy is the best middleweight in the world. I want him to face the winner of the November scheduled Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez WBC title fight in”.
Meanwhile, Limerick’s other boxing sensation, Willie “Big Bang” Casey is now five weeks out from his European Super bantamweight title fight with Spaniard Kiko Martinez and reports from his Dublin training camp are that training is intense and the Southill fighter is preparing well for his November 6 showdown at UL Arena.
