Taxi driver played key rule in saving student’s life

A UNIVERSITY of Limerick student who was seriously injured in an accident on the college campus, is recovering well in the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

Cian Cleary, 22 from Kildysart, suffered serious neck injuries when, with friends, he jumped into the UL fountain on the main campus in May, as they celebrated the end of their fourth year exams.

Cian’s family and friends have kept a close vigil by his bedside since the incident, and he has made significant progress.

UL Welfare Officer Derek Daly visited Cian and told the Limerick Post that those closest to him were delighted that the business student’s personality had returned.

“He is improving day by day, making steady progress”, said Derek. “He is conscious and has started physio in the Mater.

“Cian’s fellow students have gone to visit him a number of times, and his mother has remained at his bedside.

“The most important thing for his friends and family is that Cian is getting his personality back and able to chat to them”.

Derek revealed that a driver from Plassey Cabs was key to Cian’s survival as he pulled him out of the fountain and revived him while an ambulance was called.

“The taxi driver was extremely helpful, as were a group of first year students who were in the vicinity,” added Derek.

In a message circulated in the UL newspaper An Focal, Derek informed students that Cian’s recovery has been slow, but “his doctors are happy with the improvements made.

“The next big hurdle for Cian is the matter of if, or when, he will walk again, but his recovery to date has been extremely encouraging”.
