County convention votes in favour of new hurling board

-

LIMERICK GAA clubs have voted to set up a hurling board within the county. At last weekend’s county convention, the county board delegates voted to support Murroe Boher’s motion to introduce a “Galway-Like” hurling board structure. The county board will now operate on a system whereby there will be a football board and a hurling board, both working separately under the county board umbrella.

It was agreed at the reconvened convention to set up a 10-man committee to put together a proposed strategy for the new board in time for next month’s county board meeting.

That 10 man committee is made up of Phil Bennis, Jimmy Carroll, Owen O Neill, Donie Flynn,  Peter Curtin, John Gammell, Paddy Quilligan, Val Moloney, Michael Weekes and Jim Dooley.

The new venture comes on the back of the Murroe/Boher motion which looked for “respect, honesty and pride” to be returned to Limerick hurling. After a forgettable season last year on the field, the newly elected committee, along with the newly ratified system, should add more structure and growth to Limerick hurling. With the existing initiative of “Lifting the Treaty” still in situ, the Limerick GAA horizon looks to be positive for the first time in many years.

In on the field news, new Limerick hurling manager Donal O’Grady has decided not to enter a team into this month’s Waterford Crystal tournament.
Therefore, Limerick’s first competitive game of 2011 will not be until February 13 when they face neighbours Clare in the opening NHL Division 2.
Meanwhile, Maurice Horan’s footballers will be in action in the McGrath Cup on Sunday week, the January 16.
