Where to now for Munster?

-

MUNSTER’s exit from the Heineken Cup last weekend came as a shock to many. Even though the odds were stacked against the men in red, many fans and commentators felt that the Red Army could go to the well once more. Sadly, it was not to be the case. When a once successful side fails to build on it’s past glories, post mortems are often the order of the day. In pubs and canteens the world over, Munster fans have spent the last few days disecting the game last weekend and also offering their ideas for change. Are changes needed? Do some players need to go?
The following are just a few thoughts on where Munster need to go from here. You can agree or disagree. The great thing about sport is that it is all about opinions. This is just mine.

Munster Rugby
First off, due to past successes, fans have forgotten that Munster’s sole purpose is to create Irish international players. Going out and buying superstars might be a quick fix, but it is not allowed under Munster’s unqiue relationship with the IRFU.

Coaches
People have been looking for change in the coaching set up. I do feel Mc Gahan is doing the best with what he has, however his support network of coaches might need changing. Backline Attack, Forward play and basic skills are not where they should be.

Game Plans
Have lost five in a row to Leinster and four in a row away from home in the Heineken Cup, Mc Gahan’s one fault might be getting the right gameplan for the right game. Munster suffered from having no plan B last weekend. This cannot happen again.

Existing Players
Again, people have been looking for some players to call it a day. This might not be necessary just yet. Younger players however are due a chance. Take Ian Nagle as an example. He was man of the match on at least two occasions this season, yet he is still struggling to get into the HC squad.

New Players
Do Munster need new players? Well, the fact is, players who have been brought in have not improved what is there already. Borlase, Du Preez and Tuitupou have not set the World on fire. Smarter buys are needed. The IRFU have some say in this, so Munster need to fight their corner a little harder maybe. It is a World Cup year, so many good players will be looking to move before and after September 2011.

Fans
The fans are now needed more than ever. Munster’s budget will be stretched now that lucrative quarter/semi/final gate receipts have been missed out upon. The Magners League and the Amlin are still there to be won. It’s not all doom and gloom just yet.
