They’re back and winning

-

THE Limerick senior hurlers won their first competitive game last weekend since a win over Laois in the Championship on July 18th 2009.
That is a stat in itself. Every hurling is aware of what has gone, but what can we expect now from the future. The new season started in Ennis last Sunday and Limerick did what they had to do. A six point win over the banner was not the greatest spectacle of hurling, but it was a start.

Limerick showed signs of the, by now famous gameplan, of Donal O’Grady. The short handpassing to the man in space was coupled with hard working half back and half forward lines.
The midfield tactic of running with the ball as option one and striking to the corners as option two, worked so well that eventual man of the match Paul Browne was challenged for that accolade by his centre partner Dodge O’Grady.
The win pleased the new man at the helm. Speaking after the game, O’Grady commented that “Everyone was under pressure to perform. We didn’t overkill it, but everyone going out on the field were aware of what they were expected to do. It comes back to workrate; Jerry Wallis, the trainer has done excellent work. We are pleased, but it’s the start of a long campaign.”
Limerick play Westmeath this Saturday at 14.30 in The Gaelic Grounds. With Clare being the most feared opponent in the division, Limerick will now be expected to move on from a great first win of the season.
Looking at the first episode, this could be good.
