Brakes put on Ballykeeffe neighbourhood park

Council now exploring other options
THE long-promsed development of Ballykeeffe Neighbourhood Park is going nowhere fast, according to Fianna Fail Cllr James Collins.
He made the comments after Limerick County Council revealed that they are now exploring other options with the view to the development of an alternative venue.

Dooradoyle’s Cllr Collins asked about the progress of the park on a proposed 17 acres of land between the Dock Road and Father Russell Road, at a meeting of Limerick County Council on Monday.
Director of Environment and Emergency Services, Gerry Behan, said that it is not possible to give a projected commencement or completion date, because the council is still in negotiation with the developer in regard to the transfer of lands at Ballykeeffe.
He said that there are significant issues still to be overcome to complete the transfer of lands at Ballykeeffe – difficulties that had arisen from the downturn in the construction sector.
“Even when the issues are resolved, construction of a park at this location may not be prudent in the absence of nearby housing, which would provide natural supervision of the park.
“Experience shows that houses built in isolation have experienced considerable management and anti-social issues,” commented Mr Behan.
Cllr James Collins asked Cathaoirleach, Cllr Richard Butler:
“How were you able to tell the papers before the general election that the park could be open in two months?”
The Cathaoirleach did not respond.
