A STAR-studded international field is set to contest the Pierse Motors sponsored 124th South of Ireland Men’s Championship at Lahinch in July (22-26), entries for which close next Wednesday (June 24).
Club captain John Gleeson said “the members of Lahinch, and the entire local community always look forward to the week of the South”.
“Last year’s championship was one of the most memorable ever with our own Jonathan Keane becoming the first home grown player to win the South in 57 years. With the Walker Cup (Great Britain and Ireland versus United States, Men’s) following fast on the heels of the South, this year’s championship field promises to be one of the best ever assembled.”
Previous Walker Cup representatives to have captured the South include John Burke, JB Carr, Paul McGinley, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell.
Other past winners include Gerry Gilligan (1951, Limerick), Vincent Nevin (1976 and ‘78, Limerick), Peter Sheehan (1993, Castletroy), Patrick Collier (1997, Limerick), Cian McNamara (2004, Limerick) and Pat Murray (2012, Limerick).
Lahinch GC General Manager Paddy Keane is contactable at 065 708 1003.
