Plea to bulldoze Hyde Road ‘eyesore’

WITH just one tenant remaining in residence in the Hyde Road blocks of domestic dwellings, a plea has been made to City Council to speed up demolition.

The blocks, which stretch to the traffic lights on Carey’s Road, and are situated close to Colbert Station, has been almost completely boarded up for some considerable time.

Local councillor, Joe Leddin, is highly critical that there is no formal area or masterplan in place for the locality.

One nearby resident told the Limerick Post that the fronts had become a dumping ground.

“The whole site looks awful, what with all those boarded up windows and gardens full of rubbish.

“Plans were announced some time ago, but appear to have been left to gather dust.

“It is not a nice sight to present to the thousands who use the railway and bus station each day”.

When contacted, a spokesperson for the Housing Department in City Hall, was reluctant to provide any detailed information on the council’s overall plan for the highly strategic city area.

“Come back in a few weeks and I will be able to give you some further information,” he said.

He did confirm that the council is seeking to provide acceptable alternative accommodation to the one remaining tenant

“We are also in contact with the Department of the Environment on establishing the best treatment for the site and the wider area, for the long term.

“We have been concentrating our efforts up to now on providing alternative accommodation for the residents who had lived in the first two blocks of the Hyde Road junction with Carey’s Road and have been very successful, but as regards this third block, some of the commercial units are privately owned and we are also considering our position on how best to deal with this”.

Councillor, Joe Leddin is highly critical that there is no formal area or masterplan in place for the locality.

He pointed out that the dwellings front Jackman Park, home of Limerick FC.

“There is no overall vision for this area – I have been saying to management in City Hall for some time now that we should be proactive in going into business relationships with companies to develop worthwhile projects”.
