Limerick highest for burst pipe claims

Insurers pay out €19 million

DAMAGE caused to homes and businesses by burst pipes during last December’s big freeze have cost insurance companies almost €20 million in Limerick.
Limerick was the worst affected county in Ireland in terms of cost per thousand people.

Damaged caused across the county cost €108,245 per 1,000 people.
The big freeze was the third severe weather event in 14 months following the floods of November 2009 and the freeze of January 2010 – which have cost insurance companies €750,000,000.
Household claims nationally cost €173 million, while business claims amounted to €50 million.
The Irish Insurance Federation have advised people to take all of the necessary precautions to protect their home this winter.
