Drawing, music, musing @museum
THERE  are half a dozen free events taking place at Hunt Museum over the next week or so that will entertain, inform or engage us. On Friday May 20, the MIC philosophy lecture series continues at 1pm under the general banner for ‘Ethics, Values and Society: A Philosophical Perspective’.

The Music at the Museum Sunday recital slot holds up for Sunday 22 at 3.30pm when Folk Ragout is the theme provided by musicians Frederic Pouille and Leslie Ann Harrison. See also the ‘Then and Now’ Ceramic Exhibition which will open on Thursday 26, followed by another philosophical exploration on Friday 27 at 1pm.
Artist in residence Mark Douglas-Smith will host Saturday 28’s National Drawing Day ‘Drop-in Drawing’ event as tutor. This is open to all from 10.30am and 2.30pm and booking is a good idea. There’s a fun prize-giving ceremony at 3pm following these colourful few hours.

Dr Darkpants has  the X-Factor

FAMILY events are a feature of this year’s MBNA International Limerick Music Festival, Tuesday May 24 to Sunday 29. Expect the return of Dastardly Dr. Darkpants to UCH on Sunday, hosting his own X-Factor in a search for the most talented musician among all comers.
Joining Dr Darkpants is the usual band of wacky musicians along with panellists Simon Cruel, Cheryl Clueless and Ludwig Von Bestof’em.   ‘Dr. Darkpants has the X-Factor’ is directed by Limerick comedian, actor and playwright, Mike Finn.
Enjoy a fun-filled family afternoon at University Concert Hall, Sunday 29  at 3pm.  A pre-show party includes facepainting, circus entertainers, storytelling and games; a family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) costs €30.

EV+A, the international Exhibition of Visual  plus Arts in Limerick, resumes for next year under the care of a dedicated director. Look up the fine detailat website www.eva.ie
From Friday 27 to  Sunday 29, LCGA off-site has programmed a series of screenings, conversations and some reflections on the collaborative process. This is in partnership with the ‘Influx’ art event hosted at and organised by Occupy Space, Thomas Street.
Then on Saturday May 28, LCGA will mark National Drawing Day with outdoor drawing sessions in the People’s Park led by local Limerick artists. Participants will meet at the doors of the Carnegie Building at 11am that morning.

Limerick Macra’s mighty men

CONGRATULATIONS to an amateur comedian of skill, Michael Collins of Limerick City Macra, for leading with the laughs in Macra’s 27th National Talent Competition. Held in the National Concert Hall, Michael won the competition’s Stand Up Comedy Section while Pat O’Neill of Kilmallock Macra won the Mastermind section for the second year running.
Limerick’s third representatives in the Final were the Set Dancing group from Shannonside Macra. The dancers’ performance of the North Kerry Set won second place behind reigning title-holders Freemount of Co. Cork.
All took place over the May holiday weekend,  leaving Limerick with a total to date of 15 national titles and pushing us to No. 5 in the rollcall of honour.
