VTOS, art and the way forward

WE are all invited to the VTOS Art, Craft and Design end-of-year showcase of works by students at City of Limerick VEC on Wednesday June 1. The VTOS candidates will hold a one-day exhibition of artwork at the Adult Education Service building (the former ‘Red Tech’) on O’Connell Avenue, open on a walk-in basis from 10am to 3pm. The exhibition is comprised of various categories such as Paintings, Drawings, Batiks, Designs and Ceramics. Even so, this represents just a section of the total output created in one academic year alone.

Course leader, Jayne Foley says: “It’s exciting for us to show this work as it’s important for any artist to have their work viewed by the public. In essence, a public viewing is the final element in the creative process and this gives the students the chance to gauge that reaction”.
Having begun in September 2010, these students developed their skills “through equal measures of hard work and encouragement, both from the staff and from each other”.
The VTOS Art, Craft and Design course is an opportunity to begin on the road for a life working in the creative industries.
“Much discussion has taken place in Ireland in the last few years in relation to the arts being a key driver in economic resurgence,” comments Ms Foley. “This can add to the enhancement of the Irish brand as it is viewed from outside the country. These students will be involved in the development of that brand as they continue on their careers”.
