Lights, camera and bike action in the frame

“A rented bike scheme would encourage people to get cycling and take a break from their cars.”

LOCAL councillor, Kieran O’Hanlon has called on Limerick City Council to have broken lights on the Park Canal Bank replaced as soon as possible and to establish a cycle way on the canal. “The public light standards were uprooted and must be replaced but I’d recommend that CCTV be installed on the cycle way as people using it are very vulnerable to attack and as we are on the subject,

– cycling on Sarsfield Bridge is taking your life in your hands,” he said..
“Could we please develop a cycle lane or a boardwalk there. We have built a cycle path out as far as Groody but we should have one coming in.”
Cllr Joe Leddin asked if there had been any development regarding a rented bike scheme.
“This would encourage people to get cycling and take a break from their cars – the records show that just 3% of people are cycling.”
Referring to Colbert Bus and Rail Station, Cllr Leddin said:
“We own a lot of land in that area – are we in discussion with CIE for a state-of-the-art hub there.
City Travel Agent, Tony Brazil pointed out that “people are slipping on the pavement surface at the corner of Bedford Row and he also said that street furniture there needs to be replaced.
“There are things missing to increase traffic on the street and I also feel that we should extend the Slí na Slainte walking route to encourage more people to take regular walks along the riverside route.”
Responding to Cllr Leddin’s comments regarding Colbert Station, senior engineer, Vincent Murray said that planning permission for this had been granted four years ago.
“Hopefully it will be looked at again,” he said.  Mr Murray confirmed that new lights and “very high standard CCTV” are to be installed on the Canal Bank and that a cycle lane on the Old Dublin Road will be completed.
“We do need to revisit the city centre – upgrade works on pedestrian streets need to be looked at again,” he told councillors.
