Sweet thief pays heavy price

THE theft of a packet of Smarties has paid off in an expensive court order for a 19-year-old who has been ordered to make a €100 court poor box contribution for the theft of the sweets worth €2.53 on August 13 last from his local shop.  Dean Garvey, with an address at Scanlon Park, Castleconnell was ordered to pay the poor box contribution after he pleaded guilty to the offence dating back to last year. The amused court room heard that the accused man put the sweets under his jacket and left the store without paying.

Garda Niall O’Donovan, who was giving evidence, said that the goods were recovered and that Mr Garvey had three prior convictions none of which were for theft.
Judge Eamon O’Brien gave the accused man until September 26 to pay €100 to the court poor box and adjourned the matter.
