A MAN who was due to appear before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to appeal a jail sentence for assaulting a traffic warden instead presented himself in court for jail.
Adam Connolly (34), of Sean Heuston Place, Limerick City, had previously been convicted at Limerick District Court for a Section Two assault on the victim and was sentenced to one-month in jail.
Mr Connolly had lodged an appeal against the sentence and was scheduled to appear before the Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for the appeal hearing.
However, when Connolly arrived at the appeal court at the Mulgrave Street courts complex, he informed his solicitor, Julianne Kiely, that he was withdrawing the appeal.
Ms Kiely told the court that Mr Connolly was in court to be taken into custody.
Briefly summarising the background of the case, Padraig Mawe, the State Solicitor for Limerick City, told the court: “It was for a Section Two assault on a traffic warden and no doubt this will be a comfort to the victim.”
The details of the assault on the Council warden were not disclosed in court.
Judge Colin Daly said Mr Connolly had withdrawn his appeal and ordered him to “go into custody”.
The judge said he was affirming the order of the District Court that Mr Connolly was to serve one month behind bars.
Connolly handed himself over to prison officers in the courtroom and he was led away to Limerick Prison to begin his sentence.
