Cash to clean-up tourist areas welcomed

A NEW action plan to get rid of littler and ugly graffiti in Limerick city is to swing into play courtesy of a grant from the Department of the Environment. And the City Council own environment section is delighted with the results of their new campaign to get dog-owners to pop dog poop in any bin. A spokesperson welcomed this week’s announcement that the city will get a grant of €27,000 as part of a half-million Euro pot for local authorities to help with awareness of the litter problem.

“It’s good news and in terms of amount, it’s on a par wit last year. We will be employing a mix of awareness projects and clean-up projects, concentrating on the tourist areas and linking these in with the Tidy Towns initiative which encourages people in the city to look after their own areas,” the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, the initiative of placing notices on city bins, telling dog owners they can use any bag and any bin to clean up after their pets is working,
“We’ve seen a marked improvement in the last month. People seem to be responding to it. There’s also the issue of enforcement. We have issued a number of fines each week,” the spokesperson concluded.
