Quad-bikers put fear into Plassey walkers

A GROUP of teenage quad and mini dirt-bikers are putting fear into joggers and walkers at Plassey riverbank. The teenagers have been observed travelling at speeds of between 25-40 mph on the narrow stretch of walkway leading from close to the former Dell plant to the Bohs/UL rugby grounds. Regular walker Frances Kennedy, told the Limerick Post that with so many twists and turns on the riverbank, those who avail of the peace and tranquillity of the area are now putting their lives at risk.

“These young fellows see no danger and neither do they seem to care. People have to jump out of the way to avoid them. At the weekend, I stood up to them but got nothing but two-fingered abuse.
“They are speeding to and from a slice of land alongside the rugby grounds, where they race against each other”.
She was supported by jogger, Tony O’Brien.
“These young fellas arrive early afternoon and stay until darkness falls. I have noticed that a lot of people have stopped using this wonderful facility at Plassey. The bikers just come on you and you have to be prepared to jump aside.
“This beautiful stretch of walkway has now become a dirt track, and after a fall of rain, the place becomes muddy.
“There is another problem in that Travellers arrive on horseback to wash their horses at the old bridge”.
A Henry Street Garda spokesperson told the Limerick Post that there are by-laws in place to stop this type of behaviour and that road traffic rules apply.
