Irish Book Awards 2012’s children’s competition

IF you are aged under 16 and are an aspiring writer, a talented storyteller, or simply have a flourishing imagination, then Specsavers and the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards 2012 have a competition for you. As part of the eighth annual Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards, Specsavers is celebrating its sponsorship of the Irish Children’s Book of the Year Category (Snr & Jnr) by launching a nationwide children’s short story competition to test your imagination and talent.

Inspired by a cartoon from everyone’s favourite fairytale, children from across the country are being challenged to create a short story in 500 words or less beginning with the sentence: “He could not believe his eyes…”

Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter

ThIS cartoon features a magical young boy who loves adventure and his sidekick, a mischievous fairy. You are advised “to use as much creativity and imagination as possible. The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday November 30”.

Remember to give the short story a title, to staple your short story to the application form and to detail your name, address, age and a contact number for you and your guardian. Two lucky winners will receive all shortlisted titles in the ‘Specsavers Irish Children’s Book of the Year’ category from this year’s Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards. Your school library will also receive a donation of some of the best Irish books from the last year.

Pick up an application form in Specsavers Limerick in the Crescent Shopping Centre or Cruises Street or by downloading the cartoon and application form at www.irishbookawards.ie.

All entries should be posted to: Specsavers Short Story  Competition
c/o WHPR, 6 Ely Place, Dublin 2 before November end.
