City officials told a meeting of the Cultural and Sporting committee that they intend to make the festival “as inclusive as possible”.
And to broaden local involvement, they are contacting groups as diverse as the people employed in Revenue and volunteers in art, theatre and cultural groups.
The festival will also be an opportunity to celebrate “how multi-cultural and cosmopolitan Limerick has become,” groups from other cultures and countries being invited to stage an event or make a contribution.
Cllr Tom Shortt (Labour) said children should be involved as much as possible in the event and it was important “there would be a lot of free events so that there won’t be any financial barriers to taking part,” he said.
Officials told the meeting that “as far as possible”, events will be free of charge and they will be relying enormously on volunteers to achieve that”.
