Hotline appeal over information on missing Limerick man

A CALLER to a missing persons hotline with information on the whereabouts of a Limerick man who has been missing for 15 years, has been asked to make contact again.

The man left a message on the phone line set up by the Searching for the Missing group and operated independently of the gardaí.

The information was in connection with the disappearance of Matthew Carroll from Southill who was last seen on the evening of June 8, 1998, as he left the former Steering Wheel pub in Roxboro.

He had been socialising with friends celebrating Carew Park’s victory in the Lawson Cup the previous day.

His family believe he was murdered by members of a local crime family. The Garda probe has run cold, but remains an open investigation.

Directly appealing to the caller, a spokesperson for Searching for the Missing said: “If the person who contacted the phone line would do so again, we would really appreciate it. He left a message but we need to get more information about where Mr Carroll is buried”.

Mr Carroll’s elderly mother, Teresa, who is suffering ill health, made an emotional appeal before Christmas for information.

She then poignantly stated: “I’m 83 and I want to be buried with my son. I’ve told Seamus, my other son, that he has to put Matthew’s bones in on top of me, should I go before his body is found.”

“Fifteen years of my life have been destroyed, because he was my first son, and when he walked out that door that was the last I saw of him, and I’m still waiting for him to come home.”

“Someone knows, someone has to know. You don’t just disappear without someone knowing something. Leave the information in a church or with a priest or at a grave or wherever”, she said.

Anyone with information is asked to ring the anonymous phone line (085-2092119) or Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061-214340.
