THE Shannon river dolphins that won the hearts of local people and visitors to Bunratty are alive and well after an absence of several weeks.

The three playful mammals  have been spotted again, frolicking in the deep waters at the mouth of the Shannon. The Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation have reported that the dolphins appear to be in good health.

Thousands of visitors turned out to see the animals when they became a major attraction at Bunratty at the beginning of April. It was originally thought that they had become trapped there but expert inspection proved they were there by choice.

The pod stayed for two weeks but had not been seen in the intervening time until last week’s sighting.
